Dragon & Fire
(13"x19") -- click thumbnail for larger view. An illustration for one of my stories,
this fantasy piece was the first one I drew with Prismacolor
pencils. I rarely use anything else now.

About Brigitte Botnick
(that's me ;-)
My father's love for art
and stories rubbed off on me at an early age; the family
album is filled with photos of both of us painting.
I started accepting
commissions and selling paintings some time around age
14. Even then, my theme always centered around
animals, and colored pencils quickly became my favorite
medium. Born and raised in Germany, an oil painting of a
dog (commissioned by a German baroness) and book illustrations
bought my plane ticket to the US. Fauna
Art was born soon after and has been part of my life
for over 20 years, despite some breaks in between when
life got in the way. The addition of web services
offers an exciting new outlet for my creativity.

I am entirely
self-taught. My one art course taught me one
valuable lesson: while it's interesting to learn different
techniques, I would very quickly become frustrated with
the rigidity of formal art education, in no small part
because I have found my niche and developed my art to
fill that niche, and I don't care what someone thinks I should be
doing. But, then, that is the way I do most
everything.

September Mist (Dragon's Eggs)

September Mist
(18"x24" unframed) is quite a departure from my
usual work. It was inspired by the misty scenery of Acadia
National Park in Maine. I fell in love with the subtle
colors and the contrast of the round rocks sheltered by
larger, angular boulders, like dragon's eggs spilling out
of a cave. This painting is done in acrylics on
portrait-smooth canvas, with light airbrushing for the
mist. Next I would like to recapture this piece in Colored
Pencil.
